| | Oppressor of Donkeys This is the most dangerous of slippery slopes. Prosecution of policy decisions of previous adminsitrations is bad juju. The ramifications of which will be felt well into future administrations as the two parties bounce back and forth in and out of "power". Which is what this is all about anyway. The politicians desire for power. Regardless of whether it's George W. Bush or the sainted and holy messiah Barack H. Obama, power is what drives...... The politicians job is to get elected or reelected. Somewhere along the way their favored constituents who assisted in the electoral process get some perks out of the deal. "Torture" has been used as a tool to drive the masses into electing the present administration and congressional majorities. Now that they are in office "Truth Commissions" are expected by their constituents. Now, what "Truth" will be revealed in such commissions? What's in the "contemporaneous documents" on file at the CIA? Which of Nancy Pelosi's 5 or 6 versions of events will bear out? I expect this will die an agonizing death in the media as the far left will push for prosecutions of "Bush Administration Officials", yet those in the current congressional majority who were briefed on, and approved of (ether explicitly or implicitly) waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation techniques (Torture if you will), will silently put this one to bed to avoid sullying their own reputations any further. Then there is the pragmatic question about prosecution of previous administration officials over what amounts to a policy difference. I expect Barack Obama is intelligent and pragmatic enough to understand the implications of taking that step. I expect the ACLU and Moveon.org folks are gonna be a bit pissed shortly. |
